Alumni Spotlight

Edcouch, Texas - October 6, 2023 - Edcouch-Elsa Independent School District proudly introduces: Dr. José Cruz, a distinguished graduate of Edcouch-Elsa High School's Class of 2001. Dr. Cruz achieved remarkable success in the field of medicine, demonstrating the embodiment of perseverance, dedication, and achievement for the EEISD community.

Dr. José Cruz, a Yale University alumnus, stands as a beacon of inspiration for all of our students. His journey from the halls of Edcouch-Elsa High School to the prestigious corridors of Yale University and his subsequent accomplishments in the medical field exemplify the heights that can be achieved through determination, grit, and hard work.

Using cutting-edge technology and a collaborative team approach, Dr. Cruz specializes in providing treatment for various cancer types, as well as blood disorders such as anemia, hemophilia, leukemia, sickle cell anemia, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolisms. His expertise also extends to identifying individuals who may benefit from cancer genetic risk assessments, employing a personalized and family history-based approach.

Dr. Cruz's academic journey is a testament to his unwavering commitment to excellence. He earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Biomedical Engineering at Yale University and a Master’s in Public Health at Texas A&M Health Science Center before earning his medical degree in osteopathic medicine from the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Dr. Cruz further honed his skills through an internal medicine and pediatrics residency at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he was honored as Chief Resident. He also pursued specialized training as a hematology and oncology fellow at the University of Louisiana Health Science Center-Shreveport, where he was later named Chief Fellow.

In a heartwarming display of support for Breast Cancer Survivors and patients, Dr. Cruz recently visited Human Services classes at the South Library on "Pink Out Day" on October 6th. He passionately expressed his encouragement to students, stating, "The number one thing is to remain persistent. My parents never graduated high school. I was the first one to do that. The first one to graduate from school, go to college, get a doctorate. Family can be our biggest source of support, but we need to explain to them that some things take time."

Dr. José Cruz's remarkable journey serves as an inspiration for current and future students of Edcouch-Elsa ISD. His achievements underscore the district's commitment to nurturing talent, fostering ambition, and empowering students to reach for the stars.
