Edcouch-Elsa ISD Honors Coach Javier Gutierrez as Honorary Captain
Edcouch, Texas - September 22, 2023 - The Edcouch-Elsa Independent School District (EEISD) proudly announces the honoring of Coach Javier Gutierrez as the Honorary Captain at tonight’s Edcouch-Elsa Yellow Jackets football game scheduled for Friday, September 22, 2023. This special tribute recognizes Coach Gutierrez's remarkable contributions to the district, his outstanding coaching career, and his pivotal role in shaping the Edcouch-Elsa ISD athletic legacy.
Mr. Javier Gutierrez, who is fondly remembered as Coach Gutierrez, began his journey with Edcouch-Elsa ISD as a student-athlete, contributing to the glory of the Yellow Jacket District Championship Team in 1959. His dedication and passion for sports were evident even in those early days.
Following his time at Edcouch-Elsa High School, Mr. Gutierrez pursued higher education and earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Pan American College in 1966. His strong ties to the community and the school brought him back to EEISD as a Business Class teacher and Junior Varsity Coach. Within just three years, his talent and commitment earned him a promotion to Assistant Varsity Coach.
One of Mr. Gutierrez's most significant achievements was the establishment of the Edcouch-Elsa Varsity Baseball Team in 1971, which went on to clinch the District Championship, Bi-District Championship, and earned the prestigious title of State Quarterfinalists.
In 1972, Mr. Gutierrez reached another milestone in his career when he was promoted to the position of Head Varsity Football Coach and Athletic Director. This historic appointment made him the first Hispanic Head Coach in the history of Edcouch-Elsa ISD. His leadership, alongside EEISD's own Hugo de la Cruz, led to the memorable nickname of the Yellow Jackets as "La Maquina Amarilla," symbolizing their unstoppable and formidable presence in the sporting world.
The Edcouch-Elsa ISD family, alumni, and the entire community are excited to celebrate Coach Javier Gutierrez's remarkable journey and his invaluable contributions to the legacy of the Yellow Jackets.
