Edcouch-Elsa ISD's Mariachi Juvenil Azteca

Edcouch, Texas – August 16, 2023 – The Edcouch-Elsa Independent School District is thrilled to announce that the EEHS Mariachi Juvenil Azteca recently participated in the prestigious 34th Annual Mariachi USA event held at the iconic Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, California. The event, renowned as one of the foremost celebrations of mariachi music and culture, showcased the finest talents from across the nation in an invitation-only gathering.

Texas has a rich tradition of mariachi music, and Edcouch-Elsa ISD has always been committed to nurturing and promoting this cultural heritage. The EEHS Mariachi's participation in the 34th Annual Mariachi USA event stands as a testament to the dedication of the district and its students to preserving and celebrating this cherished musical tradition.

One such student, Joslyn Gomes, a 12th grader, exemplified the commitment to mariachi education. Starting her musical journey by picking up the violin in 6th grade with the sole aim of joining the Mariachi, Gomes's determination and passion epitomize the spirit of the EEHS Mariachi Juvenil Azteca

"This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me and the entire Mariachi group. We were all so emotional because some of us started performing in 6th grade, and to be on a national platform like the Annual Mariachi USA in California—that was amazing," expressed Melanie Hooks, a fellow 12th grader, with a joyful smile.

Gabriel Guzman, a 10th grader who skillfully plays the harp for the group, attributed his inspiration to Mariachi Director Marcos Garcia who has guided and mentored the students, helping them achieve remarkable heights in their musical journey.

The EEHS Mariachi Juvenil Azteca’s presence was met with warmth and camaraderie by fellow mariachi groups at the event, as they all joined hands to celebrate and preserve the rich cultural heritage that mariachi music embodies.

"All of the mariachi groups that we met in California were so supportive of us because we were celebrating and preserving our culture," shared Andrea Gonzalez, a 10th grader, as she proudly displayed her vihuela instrument.

Edcouch-Elsa ISD is extremely proud of the EEHS Mariachi Juvenil Azteca’s accomplishments and their representation of the district on the national stage. This achievement underscores the significance of mariachi education in Texas and its ability to unite people through the power of music and cultural appreciation.
